If there’s one thing I can say about my favorite German Shepherd-North-she’s obsessed with water. I never imagined I’d own a German Shepherd who loves water as much as North does. It doesn’t matter how big or small the water hole is, if she sees it, she’s all in. Living in Northern Virginia, we’ve been able to discover quite a few amazing dog-friendly swimming spots that North approves. We’ve met some really great people along the way exploring private SniffSpots with ponds to Swimply pools where North gets to live her best life. North and I both love these swimming holes for her. As a long-hair German Shepherd, the summer heat is not our favorite. But with our choice of a variety of swimming spots, the summer is ours to seize and savor!
If you’ve been looking for where to take your dog swimming in the Northern Virginia area, or you just want some off-leash water adventures just you and your furry friend, this guide is North-tested and head-tilt approved. Also check out It’s a Heaven Saken Hideaway for cozy pet-friendly stays.

Bonus Tips for Wet and Wild Dog Adventures
- Bring a couple of towels to dry off your pup and fresh water – swimming is exercise and can exhaust your pup quickly!
- Always rinse your dog after swimming in natural water (pond, lake, pool) to prevent any potential skin irritation and wash off any excess dirt
- Bring a floating toy or Chuck-it ball in your bag for easy retrieval play (North’s all-time favorite is the Chuck-it ball)
- Always check for ticks after exploring in SniffSpots with trails (especially in wooded areas) even if they’re on a preventative
