Planning your first trip to Walt Disney World can feel exciting… and, honestly, super overwhelming.
When I first started planning, seeing all the available activities, rides, and shows at each park, I immediately realized how easy it is to get caught up in trying to do everything — every ride, every park, every “must-see.” But I learned that, in fact, you don’t need to pack your days to the max to truly experience the magic that Disney World offers.
This 5-day Disney World itinerary is designed specifically for first-timers and families who want a more realistic, flexible, and stress-free approach to the parks. No rushing from ride to ride. No feeling like you’re on a strict schedule the entire time. After all, you’re on vacation to enjoy your time with family – not stress!
Instead, this is the exact approach we took — we were able to enjoy each park at our own pace, take breaks when we needed them, and still experience the magic without ending the trip completely exhausted.
Now, if you’re looking to visit the most magical place on Earth (like I was) that feels fun and actually enjoyable (not overwhelming), this 5-day itinerary will walk you through exactly how to do it with the magic and without the meltdown.
This trip didn’t just happen—it was planned with intention from start to finish. If you want to see exactly how we saved money at Walt Disney World without sacrificing the experience, you can read the full breakdown here.
5-Day Disney Itinerary
Here is the best family-friendly 5-day Disney World itinerary for first-timers or those who prefer a laid-back approach.
- Day 1: Animal Kingdom
- Day 2: Magic Kingdom
- Day 3: EPCOT
- Day 4: Hollywood Studios
- Day 5: Flexible Day (you choose)
Day 1: Animal Kingdom Itinerary (Best Strategy for First-Time Visitors)
Animal Kingdom was by far our favorite of all the Disney parks. We’re a huge animal-loving family through and through! So, it’s no surprise that we found this park to win all our hearts!

Park Hours + Early Entry Tips
- Park Hours: Typically 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM (always check ahead)
- Early Entry: 30 minutes before opening for guests staying on Disney property
If you’re staying on Disney property, I highly recommend taking advantage of early entry. We lined up for the shuttle from our resort around 7:00 AM, which gave us plenty of time to get into the park and start our day ahead of the crowds.
Below are my top three must-do rides at each park, along with any shows that I found to be a must-see.
Top 3 Must-Do Rides
1. Avatar (Rope Drop)
Located in Pandora, Animal Kingdom Park

Between the three of us, we voted for Avatar to rope drop with early entry into the park. It was by far the BEST ride I’ve ever experienced. The BEST!! It’s a 4-minute simulated ride that will leave you mind-blown. We were in and off the ride in 30 minutes.
If you experience motion sickness with simulated rides, I recommend taking non-drowsy Dramamine or the like before your adventures at Animal Kingdom.
2. Kilamajaro Safaris
Located in Africa, Animal Kingdom Park

After you’ve rope-dropped Avatar, head over to Kilamajaro Safaris located in Africa. It’s right next door to Pandora. Early mornings mean you have a better chance of seeing the animals in their habitats than in the warmer parts of the day.
If you have a love for animals as we do, you will love this safari ride. You get to experience giraffes, rhinos, cheetahs, lions, and so much more in Disney’s Harambe Wildlife Reserve. Have your camera ready at all times – you never know what you’ll see up next, close and personal!
3. Na’vi River Journey
Located in Pandora, Animal Kingdom Park

While I have this listed as the # 3 ride, we did ride others before coming back to Na’vi River Journey. We spent the rest of our day in Animal Kingdom exploring each continent one by one and taking our time. It wasn’t until right before the park closed that we decided to head over to Na’vi River Journey. This ride always has a long line, yet the line was not “as bad” right before park closing. We waited maybe 50 minutes at most, and this was a great way to end our day at Animal Kingdom.
Disney Shows at Animal Kingdom
Animal Kingdom did not disappoint when it came to their shows. Due to the nature of this Disney park featuring live animals in the Kilamajaro Safaris and throughout the park, the shows do not contain loud noises, fireworks, or lights. I love that Disney considers the animals when creating shows for guests.
Festival of the Lion King
If there’s one show you cannot miss at Animal Kingdom, it is the Festival of the Lion King. By far, the absolute BEST show; from the costumes, cultural dances, singing, music, talent, and performances by all cast members. Do not skip this show! They usually have a show every hour starting at 10:00 am through no later than 4:00 pm. This is a popular show among many and for good reason. You’ll want to arrive at least 30 minutes, if not a bit earlier, to wait in line. I was in awe of this show! Get ready for the best show at Animal Kingdom right before your very eyes!
Day 2: Magic Kingdom Plan
Magic Kingdom is probably the first park that comes to your mind when you hear Walt Disney World, and for good reason. It has all the activities for the youngest to the oldest Disney lover. There are character meet-ups throughout the park, and every single Disney princess you can imagine is at Magic Kingdom.

Park Hours + Early Entry Tips
- Park Hours: Typically 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM (check for updates)
- Early Entry: 30 minutes before opening for guests staying on Disney property
If you’re staying on Disney property, I highly recommend taking advantage of early entry here. We made sure to be on the shuttle by 8:00 AM, which gave us a head start on some of the most popular rides before the crowds really picked up.
Starting your day early at Magic Kingdom allows you to experience more without feeling rushed later on.
Top 3 Must-Do Rides
1. TRON (Rope Drop)
Located in Tomorrowland, Magic Kingdom

Have you ever wanted to see what it feels like to be in one of the futuristic-type movies? Or better yet, get the feel of riding a motorcycle-like vehicle? Now’s your chance. A ride on TRON will make you feel like you’ve stepped into the future at high speeds of 60 mph, coasting on a track that takes you both in and outdoors with fast turns and drops for the thrill-seeker. Imagine dark moments where all you see is, well, nothing! The ride is smooth, fast, futuristic, and a must-do!
2. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
Located in Fantasyland, Magic Kingdom
The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train just takes me back to Snow White and her seven dwarves. This ride is for families of all ages and provides both the excitement of a rollercoaster while still keeping it calmer for those who may not be into the other types of adrenaline-rushing coasters. The carts themselves rock back and forth, which is the first time I’ve experienced it before, and I found this to be unique and fun for something new. We did wait quite a while for this ride.
The line for this ride is partially outdoors and the other portion indoors, giving you some relief from those UV rays. Disney provides lots of oversized fans at most rides to help alleviate the heat. Kudos to Disney from someone who is not a fan of sweating my tail off waiting for a ride!
3. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
Located in Fantasyland, Magic Kingdom

It gets HOT in Florida, and thankfully, Disney considered this when developing their rides for families. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure (formerly known as Splash Mountain) is a 50-foot log-flume water ride where you get to cool off from the Florida heat. This ride had us laughing the entire time! It was obvious this was our first experience on this ride. Both my daughter and I raised our hands at each drop that never happened. It was in the moment we didn’t expect it to be the drop that it was, in fact, just that.
Throughout the ride, you will encounter a remake of different scenes from the Disney movie, The Princess and the Frog. I was in amazement at the level of detail at every turn. The music is welcoming, and the entire ride is just peaceful and fun.
Disney Shows at Magic Kingdom
There are several different shows and events you can participate in throughout the day at Magic Kingdom, but I’m sharing the absolute one show/event that captivated me and made me want to see more.
Happily Ever After
This is probably one of the more well-known shows that takes place at Magic Kingdom. It is a combination of music, lights, and fireworks that brighten the sky and bring your evening to a magical end. The show starts promptly at 9:00 pm, and you will want to find your spot on Main Street or somewhere near the castle before 9:00 pm. By the time the show starts, it is packed like sardines. Keep your kids close by and enjoy the show. Happily Ever After will captivate you, leaving you feeling joyful and with a sense of empowerment that you, too, can make your dreams come true.
Day 3: EPCOT Itinerary Tips
EPCOT, for most, is known for families to visit the many countries to experience the delicious variety of foods, desserts, and drinks offered. However, EPCOT offers some very fun and unique rides that you may not be aware of.

Park Hours + Early Entry Tips
- Park Hours: Typically 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM
- Early Entry: 30 minutes before opening for guests staying on Disney property
If you’re using Disney transportation (like we did from Pop Century), you’ll likely enter EPCOT from the back entrance — which actually works in your favor for certain rides.
We arrived early and took advantage of shorter wait times right away, which made the rest of the day feel much more relaxed.
Top 3 Must-Do Rides
You’ll see below I have two rides listed to rope drop. This is determined by where you enter Epcot. If you’re entering from the front of Epcot, I recommend rope dropping Guardians of the Galaxy as it is close to that entrance. As with Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, if you’re entering from the backside of Epcot, it is faster to rope drop this ride. If you’re traveling via Disney’s Pop Century shuttle, you will arrive on the backside of Epcot and Remy’s is right inside the entrance.
1. Guardians of the Galaxy (Rope Drop)
Located near World Celebration, Epcot

Guardians of the Galaxy is a ride that will leave you amazed. From your first steps inside the building, where there are virtual interviews, you get to watch between the characters in Guardians of the Galaxy and news cast members. Everything about the details inside the building screams futuristic and will leave you asking: How did they do this? But get ready. Once it’s your time to enter the ride, you will be swept away on a trackless, yet fast ride that brings you into the movie with a mission and all the characters. It felt so real! If you experience any motion sickness, I highly recommend some non-drowsy Dramamine or the like before the ride.
I listed this as the ride you’ll want to rope drop, as we did not. Lesson learned. We waited close to 95 minutes to ride the Guardians of the Galaxy. The line outdoors is in the direct sun. Disney provides umbrellas and fans for guests in line, but this is one ride that, in the Florida heat, sometimes that’s just not enough. This is when you bring out your portable handheld fan and stay hydrated!
2. Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure (Rope Drop)
Located in France, Epcot

While I didn’t snap a photo of the ride Remy, I did grab a nice photo of a French pastry shop menu right outside of Remy’s where the desserts are to die for! You’re welcome! I had a couple of friends recommend Remy’s before our trip to Disney. Initially, I didn’t see what the big deal was until I was on the ride. Think singing, spins, and a trackless ride throughout Chef Remy’s kitchen with trouble from Ratatouille. The design throughout the line waiting to get on the ride, from every little detail to the accuracy of the movie itself, is simply incredible.
3. Soarin’ Around the World
Located in World Nature, Epcot

So find your way across this bridge in Epcot and get ready to soar above the clouds, visiting different parts of the world. While this may not be on everyone’s top 3 list of rides as a must-do in Disney’s Epcot, it definitely made mine! You’ll be buckled in for a simulated ride where you’ll feel like you’re flying through the skies, exploring landmarks, and the beautiful wonders of the world. The ride brings your senses to the forefront, imagining what it must be like to truly be up in the clouds, gliding through Mother Nature’s greatest designs. The ride is great for all ages and will leave you wanting more!
Disney Shows at Epcot
Luminous: The Symphony of Us
I’d love to say that Magic Kingdom’s Happily Ever After was the best of all, but I can’t. Each Disney park has its own twist on its evening shows that just brings the magic to you over and over…and over again! Epcot’s Luminous show was no different. Imagine firelit torches at every corner of each country, lighting the waters beneath them, music that brings the fountains of water to life, and they begin to dance to, and fireworks that light the sky above. This beautiful combination is what you’ll experience at Epcot’s Luminous: The Symphony of Us show. The show starts promptly at 9:00 pm each evening. Grab your place anywhere along the water to sit and be amazed!
Day 4: Hollywood Studios Guide
Our second favorite Disney park is Hollywood Studios. You get the best of everything. Think rollercoasters for all ages, Hollywood-themed gift shops, a variety of food choices, and all the Disney favorite movies from Toy Story to Star Wars to Disney’s Villains.

Park Hours + Early Entry Tips
- Park Hours: Typically 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM
- Early Entry: 30 minutes before opening for guests staying on Disney property
Disney’s Hollywood Studios is no different than the other Disney parks when it comes to early entry. If you’re staying on Disney property, getting there early is the golden key. We were on the shuttle by 8:00 AM so we could take advantage of early entry and rope drop on one of the most in-demand rides.
Starting early here makes a big difference in how much you’re able to experience without feeling like you’re constantly waiting in line.
Top 3 Must-Do Rides
1. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance
Located in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Hollywood Studios

Whether you’re a Star Wars fan or not, this is a must-do and a must-rope drop at Hollywood Studios. I am still lost for words to describe how incredible the level of detail is, leading up to the ride and the ride itself. It is not a rollercoaster; yet, a trackless, motion-simulated ride that brings you side by side with storm troopers, C-3PO, Anakin Skywalker, and so on. Grab yourself a place in line as soon as the park opens for early entry to ensure you get to experience this ride before the crowds take over!
2. Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
Located on Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood Studios

While this ride may not be at the top of many people’s lists, especially if you have a fear of heights, it was just what we love to experience. The mix of thrill and adventure all in one. The Tower of Terror, an old hotel, has an elevator ride where you sit, buckle up, encounter ghosts and flickering lights while you make your way to the top, only to drop! Are you brave enough to enter the Tower of Terror?
3. Slinky Dog Dash
Located in Toy Story Land, Hollywood Studios

Slinky Dog Dash is a very popular ride among both children and adults. The wait in line keeps you busy with views of Toy Story-themed billboards and decor. The ride itself isn’t overly fast, but it maintains a decent speed to keep you enjoying your ride. There are turns and smooth drops that are mild enough for even those who usually would not entertain a rollercoaster. If it’s your first time on a rollercoaster, this is the ride for you. You’ll find it both exhilarating and fun!
Disney Shows at Hollywood Studios
Fantasmic
Fantasmic absolutely took my breath away and pulled at my heartstrings. The music, the words shared with the world during this show, the fireworks and display, the Disney princesses and characters, the entirety of Fantasmic. For a moment in time, I think we were all frozen, encapsulated in the show that proved to each of us that anything and everything we could ever dream for ourselves is absolutely possible! The show has varying times starting at 8:00 pm, 8:30 pm, and 9:00 pm. It is highly recommended to check the showtime for the day you plan to visit Hollywood Studios. Do not miss this show!
Day 5: Flexible Disney Day or Rest Day

This is the beauty of creating a Walt Disney World vacation that’s both affordable and flexible. I purchased a 5-day park ticket that let us visit any park twice. Since this was a gift for my daughter, I let her choose which park we revisited on Day 5 — and she picked Hollywood Studios!
You can use your extra park day however it works best for your family: mid-week, back-to-back at the same park, or as a special finale at your favorite park. The flexibility means you don’t have to rush to see everything in one day. We spent a good portion of our final day enjoying Hollywood Studios, then returned to our Disney value resort to relax for the rest of the afternoon.
The best part? The freedom of choice is entirely yours. By the end of your trip, you’ll be so glad you followed this stress-free Disney itinerary — especially if it’s your first time at the parks!
